Use this air freight chargeable weight calculator to compare actual gross weight with volumetric weight across multiple cargo pieces. It is intended for exporters, importers, forwarders, and operations teams checking an air or express quote. How this is calculated
For each row, the calculator multiplies length, width, height, and quantity to obtain cubic centimeters. It divides that volume by the selected volumetric factor to obtain volumetric kilograms. Actual kilograms and volumetric kilograms are totaled across all rows, and the larger total becomes the chargeable weight basis.
The factor represents the space-to-weight conversion used by the service. Common public examples include 6,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram for some international air workflows and 5,000 for some air or express workflows. The applicable forwarder, lane, product, and contract determine the real factor and rounding.

Worked example
One piece measuring 60 by 40 by 50 centimeters occupies 120,000 cubic centimeters. With a factor of 5,000, its volumetric weight is 24 kilograms. If the actual gross weight is 20 kilograms, the volumetric result is larger.
The estimated chargeable weight is therefore 24 kilograms. If there are four identical pieces, actual weight totals 80 kilograms and volumetric weight totals 96 kilograms, so 96 kilograms remains the chargeable basis before service-specific rounding, minimums, and rate calculation.
How to interpret the result
When volumetric weight controls, the shipment uses more aircraft or vehicle space relative to its mass. Packaging changes may reduce chargeable weight, but the package must remain suitable for handling, stacking, and cargo protection.
Use gross weight, not product net weight, and measure the complete outside package. For mixed pieces, create one row per size and weight combination so each quantity is applied to the correct envelope.
What to measure
Use the outside packaged dimensions as the shipment will be tendered. Include pallets, skids, cartons, wrapping, overhang, and projections. Weigh the complete packaged unit, not only its contents. When pieces differ, create a separate row or calculation for each size and weight combination.
